Finally moved the chicks in!

Hey there! Hope eveyone had a fantastic weekend!

Mine was filled with lots of dirt and elbow grease!

I finally finished the new coop/ quack shack!

For all you new readers out there, I have been working

on a new coop made completely from reclaimed

material (aka... junk laying around the yard ;)

So after a weekend of non-stop hammering and painting

I finally got it ready to move everyone in..

I think they're pretty content...

They now have four nesting boxes for the hens
and one large one for the ducks.

I'm also going to add a little door on the back, and a run
for them to go outside and get some sunshine. I may
eventually let them roam free in the afternoons,
but with all the hawks we have around here,
they will have to be under close supervision!

Now to add some cute decorations (and flowers of course!)

I'll be back soon with more pics of the inside :)

Hope everyone is having a great monday!

Pallet coop update

Hi there everyone!
I thought I'd share an update on how our little coop is coming along!
My husband brought a few very large shipping pallets home
from work for me. Two of them were about 5ft by 9ft so I used those as the main sides
and another one about 6ft llong and 5ft high for the back wall. I tied them all together with
3" wood screws to help hold everything in place while I put the rafters up. For the
rafters I used some old 8ft 2x4's and laid them cross ways every two feet or so
and anchored them to the pallets.
Then for the first layer of roof, I used some osb board that I had removed from the large
pallets and it worked out great. The next step is another more waterproof layer of
roofing, which I'm still debating on what to use.
We're definitly making progress, and using all repurposed pallets
and lumber allowed me to make it bigger than I had origanally planned.
It's now 9ft long and 5ft wide!

This pic was taken right before I threw the osb on the roof,
whew, that was a rough job to tackle all by myself!

That white shelf on the inside is going to be nesting boxes
I drug it out of one of our barns, the cool thing about it
is that it already had seperated cubbys that will be the perfect size for the hens.
It's hard to tell in the pic but the whole thing is sitting
on bricks and 4x4s that I cemented in the ground.
 It's definilty not going anywhere,lol.
So, now I'm browsing pinterest looking at all the beautiful coop door ideas.
It's really hard to choose.
And I think I've definitely decided to add
a window in the front complete with a window
box for flowers! I'm so excited, I cant wait to get to the
decorating part! I have sooo many ideas for the interior (including an old chandelier!)
Well I better get back out there, and try to finish what I can on it for the day.
Hope everyone
is having a wonderful spring day!

chicks and roses

Hey there! Wow we have had some crazy weather here in Texas lately! One day its 85 degrees the next we're lucky if it gets into the sixties. Hot and dry then cold and wet and it's may! This is the kind of stuff we normally get in december! The plants and animals dont know what to think, I'm just hoping the warmer weather sticks around this time, I hate the cold, I mean really if its under 70  degrees I just want to hide in bed all day with my head covered up :) My roses on the other hand seem to be loving this weather!

So anyways... about a month ago we picked up some new baby chicks from the feed store! Four black marans, two blue bantams, and two new ducklings (because I think our duck is feeling a bit lonely and confused, she spends most of her time hanging out with our rooster..)

I've got the cutest little helper! He loves his chickens!

My little curious one, she is always first to greet me :)

Has anyone else got new chicks this year, I'd love to see pics of them. I've been trying to think of interesting names for all of them. Got any ideas for me?
We're working on a larger coop to meet the needs of our ever growing flock. Pics to come soon. I think we're going to try to make the whole thing from pallets, wish me luck!

spring!

How is everyone's garden coming along this sping? Have you been busy digging new rows and watering new seedlings. I sure have! I cant wait for all the garden newbies to pop their heads out of the ground. Luckily we finally got some much needed rain, so everything around here is green and lovely! Happy spring everyone!
P.S. I'll be back later with garden pics, and a post about new baby chickens!
